Cosmetology Academy

The Cosmetology Program at the Madison County Career Technical Center is a series of 12 classes taught over a three-year period. Students can enroll in the 10th grade, 11th or 12th grades and hours completed may transfer to a community college or local private cosmetology school.

What is Cosmetology?
Cosmetology is defined as the professional skill or practice of beautifying the face, hair, and skin. But, what does that mean? It means that you have the opportunity to learn hair techniques like cutting, coloring and styling. Not only that, but you also learn about the face and skin, including things like waxing, skincare and treatments, and makeup.

Job Outlook
Employment of barbers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists is projected to grow 13 percent from 2016 to 2026, faster than the average for all occupations. Population growth will lead to greater demand for hair care services.

Industry Credentials
Students enrolled in the Cosmetology program may earn the following credentials:

  • Barbicide (stackable credential)
  • Hours may be applied to post-secondary education and licensure

Dual Enrollment
This program is a partner with Drake State Community and Technical College. Students enrolled may earn college credit that can be applied to either a training certificate or an associate’s degree. Students must have a 2.5 GPA and be classified as a 10th, 11th, or 12th grader. Tuition assistance is available through the Alabama Workforce Development Scholarship program.
